As a child I had many fond memories involving delicious southern food prepared by my mama – comfort food at its finest. Coming from a household of 7 people living on one blue-collar salary, my mama worked miracles every single day. Her monthly food budget was a fraction of the average one-week grocery budget, yet she still prepared home-cooked, wholesome meals for our family. This skill was inherited from my dear mamaw, Anna Mae. Canning was done out of necessity, as well as tradition. If I think back to my childhood years, I can remember the taste of my mama’s homemade jams and pickled vegetables/fruit…amazingness!
As a grown woman with 4 kiddos of my own, I have come to have a new-found appreciation and fondness for my mama’s jarred goodies. Each of my jarred goodies is named after the southern women in my family, specific to their personality and tastes with a cheeky phrase to remind us to have fun, enjoy life and eat good food.
Pickles & Pie is near and dear to my heart because it allows my childhood memories to live on, hopefully, for many years to come. I’d like to think that it is a future legacy that can be passed down to my own girls. A legacy that they will nourish and add their own individuality to, as well as be afforded the opportunity to reap the rewards of the entrepreneurial spirit that has burned inside me since high school. I have a dream!
At the root of it all, I’m just an ordinary girl trying to accomplish extraordinary things while providing value to my family, my fellow human and the food industry. I am ready to make my mark on the world, one pickle at a time!
Remember, when all else fails, EAT MORE PIE!!!
